Woman’s Emotional Support Dog Comforts Her When She’s Having An Anxiety Attack

There are many benefits to having a furry companion by your side. But for some people, the need for a pet is crucial for their mental health.  While we live in a more liberal and accepting society, there is still a lot of stigma surrounding mental health. Not everyone understands the everyday struggles of those who have debilitating illnesses that essentially invisible to the world. It can be quite isolating to suffer from depression or severe anxiety when you seem “fine” to the outside world. That is where emotional support animals can be a very valuable aid to those who are struggling with their mental health.

This is something that is very near and dear to Jen Medrano, as she has experienced the struggle firsthand. She’s the proud owner of Watson and Kiko, her two dogs who make her life complete with loads of love and happiness. But it’s Watson who has been an absolute rock for Jen, often helping her to navigate through the more difficult patches of life. And because of all the emotional help that he has brought into her life, Jen decided to spread awareness on Instagram through a very sweet video in which she details life with a support dog. Jen wanted to show others that there are so many crucial benefits for people to have emotional support dogs.

As she wrote in her caption, “I suffer from anxiety and was recently diagnosed with PTSD. Having Watson be my emotional support dog was the best thing that [has] happened to me. I’ve grown so much as a person thanks to that one dog in my life that makes me want to keep going.”

In the video, viewers can observe Jen as she sits on the floor, her head slumped in her hands. That is when Watson sees her and immediately rushes over in order to give Jen a hug. This small act is everything that she needs to be able to work her way through the difficult moment – and through it all Watson is faithfully there for her and lending his support.

And his role has been even more vital throughout the pandemic, as Jen added, “While being quarantined and having time to reflect on many things, one thing I thought of is how on earth was I so lucky to have such a caring and special dog like Watson. Dogs are amazing. Dogs are life.”

And that is so true – dogs are the best! What do you think of Jen and Winston’s story? Do you have an emotional support dog? Do you know someone who does? Let us know!
