After Maria Luiza Valcazara moved into a new apartment, she was all alone. That is when the Brazilian native made the decision that all lonely people make: she got herself a little companion in the form of a black puppy named Chips. The two instantly bonded and became best friends.
Chips is like many puppies in that he gets nervous when Maria has to leave the house to go to work. He started to bark and cry until Maria would come home.

Since she was living in a new place, Maria was concerned that Chip might be seen as an “annoyance” to her new neighbors but in time she came to learn how wrong she was.
“At the time, I was scared,” Maria said to The Dodo. “I wondered who could have left it there at the door since I had little contact with the people in the building.”

One day after work she returned to find a letter and package waiting for her outside the door.
At first, she was a little worried that it was going to be a complaint from someone in the building. After inspecting it further, Maria realized that it was actually meant for Chips and was “written” to him by another dog named Corote.
Having been translated from Portuguese, the letter read as follows:
“Hi, my friend. I’ve noticed that you’ve been crying a lot when you’re alone, and I’ve been through this phase. I talked to my mom yesterday and together we decided to give you these toys, so you have a distraction when you feel alone. I’m here to make you an invitation: I live alone with Mom and, because of that, I have a room of my own to horse around in as much as I want, so you can spend some time here with me! We can do a lot of partying together!!! We hope you enjoy the things we gave you! Many kisses from Corote and of my mother Nichole.”

“When I started to read the letter, I cried a lot,” Maria said.
Although the two dogs had never “formally” met before, they still set up a play date for the two.
“I took Chips to [Nichole’s] apartment so we could talk and our two dogs could meet. Nichole offered to help me with Chips whenever I needed it,” Maria said. “She gave me some tips she learned from raising Corote.”
Chips and Corote are not best friends, and they get together whenever possible.
Maria is feeling much more comfortable in her building, knowing that there are still kind people out in the world.
She said, “It was a beautiful gesture Nichole made for us. And I’m sure other people can benefit through their animals, too. I am an example of this. Besides having a neighbor, I now have a wonderful friend!”
What a nice neighbor!
