Veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward has always been an advocate of promoting safe living conditions for dogs – particularly during the winter months.
However, the vet has become frustrated by the number of people who believe that “doghouses” and “blankets” are adequate enough protection for dogs during freezing temperatures outside.
In order to prove a point, Dr. Ernie launched a passionate campaign to break this cycle of thinking when he chose to set up camp in a dog house for the night, and broadcast the experience to pet owners.
Even though Dr. Ernie was completely geared up and ready for heavy winter weather, he was only able to endure 4 hours inside the dog house. And keep in mind, he was dressed in layers – something that our furry friends don’t have.

In this video, viewers can watch as the temperatures continued to drop by the hour, causing the vet to have a visible reaction to the experience.
Dr. Ernie was shivering uncontrollably before he went numb. By the end of his 4 hours, the temperatures had gone down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit – and that is when the vet couldn’t go on.
By the end of his time in the dog house, Dr. Ernie was much more staunch in his belief that dogs should be brought indoors during winter – regardless of the breed. No animal deserves to be put through that kind of suffering.
Dr. Ernie also requested that people always report homeless animals to the proper authorities in order for them to be brought into shelters where they can be out of the cold.
It’s so important to spread awareness of this issue and make sure that people bring their pets inside during the cold – so let’s share and spread the word.
