Dogs are many wonderful things, but being a good patient isn’t always something that’s achievable for them. Getting a dog to take their medication can sometimes be a struggle. When our dog got spayed shortly after adoption, she was a tough patient to put up with. For starters, she constantly tried to take off her cone of shame. Not only did she battle us with her cone but getting her to take her medication meant trying to trick her during mealtime.
My dog’s hatred of medicine meant that my mom was forced to crush all pills into a fine powder that she then rolled into a ham slice and feed to my dog. It worked. But it was a practice that isn’t uncommon to many dog owners. It’s safe to say that many of us reading this article have had to get creative when it comes to pill administration. But as creative as we try to get, sometimes our pups are just one step ahead of us.
For one owner, it was a constant game of cat and mouse trying to get his dog to take the medication that he needed. A Rottweiler by the name of Brutus had quite bad arthritis. As a result, the pooch needed about five pulls a day. But he was not about to give in to his owner’s attempts to get him to take the pills. Instead, this clever pup had a different idea altogether: he’d play dead!
