Service Dog Helps Young Girl With Mobility Disorder Walk Again

If you’re fortunate enough to have a dog, then you already know that they make the best of friends. There is no other companion as loyal as a dog. They will do anything for you. My dog was a very loyal buddy when it came to following me around the house at night when things got scary, but I still needed a glass of water. She was more than happy to be my constant sidekick. And it’s this kind of willingness to always be by our sides that makes dogs such great candidates for such jobs like therapy dogs or service dogs.

And for one young girl named Bella, her service dog was a godsend. The 11-year-old child lives with Morquio Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects a child’s bones and spine, along with certain physical abilities. As a result of her illness, she has spent most of her life either on crutches or a wheelchair.

But that changed after she met George, the Great Dane that became her service dog. The dog was very much the reason that Bella’s life has made leaps and bounds of improvement. Bella’s mom explained how the family had volunteered with the rescue Service Dog Project Inc. in order to get the girl a service dog. Bella herself explained that she as in a point in her young life where she wanted a change – and crutches and wheelchairs were not what she wanted for her future. While volunteering with the organization, Bella first encountered George by chance.

It was a meeting that immediately culminated in the two becoming immediate friends. Megan Kokoras, a trainer at the organization, recalled how the two of them just bonded and everyone knew that these two were meant to be a pair together. The two of them were a perfect match, and together, the long road began for Bella to get to walking again. The loving and patient dog was there for her, literally every step of the way. He helped her to be able to walk again, gaining back some mobility and independence for herself.

That is why the family wanted to celebrate George’s love and companionship by having him featured on “Dog’s Best Day,” because he’s such a hero to them. And based off the video clip, we could not agree more!
