Who remembers learning basic math in second grade? It wasn’t the easiest, was it? Well, now there is a program being implemented at South Highlands Elementary, that is supposed to help make things easier…and it involves puppies!
Thanks to Robinson’s Rescue, a number of puppies are on loan to kids for a second year. These puppies help the students to gain some confidence in their classroom.
Mary Harris, the principal of the magnet school in the 800 block of Erie Street said, “The kids light up and they’re so willing to read to these dogs. They’re just so much more eager to do it and it’s not threatening.”
The students get split into groups where they read to the puppies, taking turns doing so. The students also try to explain the rules of math to the puppies as well. Teaching others is a great way of learning.

Dr. Andrew Master Everson, president of Robinson’s Rescue, a low-cost spay and neuter clinic in Shreveport explained, “It’s just the simple things in life that matter so much. When you put a dog with them, their confidence just flourishes and they bloom.”
While the students are benefiting, so are the puppies. It’s a win-win!
“When they’re in their small groups with the puppy, I can just see the puppy’s so happy,” Everson said. “It’s priceless because they really get that love and attention that they might not have seen in days or weeks.”
According to Harris, it has paid off as the test scores from those students have shown improvement since being with the puppies.
