Most of us try to be good neighbors. However, one man from Houston, Texas is getting hailed as a hero after he saved his neighbor’s dog’s life.

Johnny Mathis was walking to his apartment when he noticed his neighbor and her dog waiting for their building’s elevator. He watched as the woman stepped into the elevator, but then saw that her Pomeranian didn’t make it inside before the doors began to close.
Mathis was horrified as the elevator began to go up to the next floor, and the door was lifted off the ground by his leash. Without hesitation, Mathis grabbed the dog and wrestled it out of its collar before the leash was able to strangle the small dog to death.
“Y’all I’m shaking!!!” Mathis wrote on Twitter. “I just saved a dog on a leash that didn’t make it onto the elevator with the owner before the door closed! I just happened to turn around as the door closed and it started to lift off the ground I got the leash off in time.”

At the time, the dog’s owner wasn’t aware that her fur baby had been saved, so she began screaming hysterically.
“She started screaming as soon as the door shut and was bawling her eyes out when it came back down,” Mathis followed up in a Tweet.
Thankfully, this incredible rescue was caught on the building’s security camera, and it quickly went viral online – making Mathis into an overnight sensation for his animal heroism.

“Instinct just kicked in, I just grabbed that leash,” he told ABC 13.
Thank goodness he did! That is one lucky Pomeranian.
