Vitiligo is a condition most commonly associated with humans, where the skin loses its pigmentation. However, it can also present itself in some dogs – causing them to lose the coloring in their coats.
One example of this is Blaze, the rising social media star from Finland. Blaze went viral after his picture was posted to the popular Facebook group “Dogspotting Society.” There, it received more than 32,000 likes from dog people everywhere.
What makes the 10-year-old black Labrador is his unique black and white speckled coat – all a result of his vitiligo.
For most of his life, Blaze looked like any other black Lab. However, about a year ago, his owner, Santeri, noted that his pup had developed a small white patch on his ear. He didn’t think anything of it, but then the patch began to grow and was soon spreading across his body. As a result, Blaze’s head and shoulders are now more white than they are black.
While vitiligo may impact his fur’s pigmentation, there is nothing to worry about, as it doesn’t affect his overall health – he’s still a happy, healthy older dog.
However, his new look has meant an increase in nicknames for the pooch.
As Santeri shared with Bored Panda, “The white color began spreading from a small spot on his ear. Interestingly, all of his brothers and sisters still remain single-colored.”
Santeri added, “He is 10-years-old now, and has received a few nicknames because of his age, like ‘the old man’ and ‘the funny old man’.”
While he may be nicknamed “old man,” Blaze has proven that he’s anything but – this canine still enjoys getting out and about whenever he can.
Santeri said, “Blaze is a healthy and very energetic guy. He’s always ready to join you wherever you go. He likes to make people happy and put a smile on their faces.”
