Adoptable Shelter Dog Gets Cast As Sandy In High School Production Of Annie

We all know the story of Annie and how she went from rags to riches, leaving the hard-knock life behind her. And who does this story resonate better with, than shelter dogs? So when it came down to casting the role of Annie’s loyal side kick Sandy, one high school chose to cast a real-life shelter dog.

According to CBS, Shelby County High School in Columbiana, Alabama brought in Triton Daniel, a husky/boxer mix to play the role of Sandy in their high school production. Triton Daniel had been living at the Shelby County Humane Society.

The student cast came up with the idea of getting a shelter dog, and when they ran it by their high school theatre teacher, Kathyrn Myrick, she absolutely jumped at the idea.

As Myrick told the news outlet, “It kind of fits the theme of Annie. Annie is about second chances. It’s about acceptance and one thing I know, just from being a huge animal lover myself, is a lot of these animals need a second chance.”

Triton Daniel had been living at the human society since September, after being dumped by his family. As the news outlet revealed, the family had Triton Daniel for seven years but wanted a smaller dog so they got rid of him. Disgusting!

Savana Tarwater, a volunteer at the humane society, said, “I’ve known this dog for over 100 days and I’ve known he is a good candidate and very sweet and gentle and nice and no one has wanted to adopt him because he does look a little funny but this play has allowed him to get adopted.”

But in a wonderful twist of fate, Triton Daniel did get his own rags-to-riches happily ever after. According to the news outlet, after Triton Daniel’s story got out all across social media, one family became interested and they adopted him after the final show.
