A Mexican Hairless dog struggles with hiccups.

Hello. I have a 7 week old coated Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican hairless) and he seems to have a something that seems like hiccups or some sort of mild twitch. I’m not sure. It usually lasts a few minutes. It’s almost not noticeable unless I holding him or if my hand is on him. He is not bothered by it at all. I would like to know if it is epilepsy or just burping or what.

Dr. Weaver Responds

Dear Geon,

If it sounds and feels like hiccups, that is probably what it is. Puppies are very prone to hiccups. Just like human hiccups, they are harmless, usually go away on their own, and will become significantly less frequent as he ages!
