190-Lb Mastiff Had To Be Rescued After It Got Too Tired While On A Hike

The Beatles once said, “I get by with a little help from my friends.”

And that is exactly what Floyd the 190-pound mastiff needed when he went for a hike in Salt Lake City, Utah. Floyd and his family were out enjoying the autumn day as the steep trail they were following was giving them stunning views of Salt Lake Valley. However, on the way down, the adventure went awry.

Floyd had collapsed, prompting many concerned hikers to start calling the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s department around 6:30 p.m.

Amy Sandoval was hiking along the Grandeur Peak Trail with Floyd’s owner – who was her brother – as well as a few other family members. On the descent, things went wrong as they navigated a very challenging section with both Floyd and a 10-year-old. Eventually, they all managed to get back to the trail, however Floyd was finished.

The family had attempted to bring enough water for Floyd, but they began running low. Thankfully, many fellow hikers stopped to offer them some kindness and share their water, as the family had given all theirs to Floyd.

“A vet also stopped to examine Floyd and recognized what bad shape he was in,” Amy said.

But it wasn’t just the water situation that was an issue. With the sun close to setting, the family had to get the young kids out of the cold.

While most of their group kept moving, Amy said, “My brother never left his side. He was going to sleep with him overnight.”

Thankfully, neither Floyd or his owner were going to have to stay out overnight as help was headed their way.

Members of Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team headed the two miles up the trail in order to reach both Floyd and his owner. One look at Floyd and they knew that it wasn’t going to be easy.

They put the 3-year-old mastiff into a litter and then carried him down the side of the mountain, taking the journey very carefully.

The sheriff’s office later reported, “Floyd was a good boy and was happy to be assisted.”

Even though Floyd cooperated like a good boy, the rescue mission still took roughly four hours to complete. Thankfully, it ended with everyone safe and sound.

Both Floyd and his family were grateful to the Search and Rescue team for their assistance.

As Amy later stated, “He’s resting well at home. I am SO relieved this turned out and my brother and Floyd got off the mountain. Thank you, search and rescue volunteers!”

So there you have it – Floyd got by with a little help from his friends. He will probably need a little bit of time to recover from his weekend adventure, but he seems to be doing well.
