If there is one thing that is safe to say about the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that everyone has become a baker. Last week when I went for my one essential trip to the grocery store, I noticed that the shelves were pretty bare in the baking section. All the flour was gone. Thankfully, I didn’t need it, but I was just surprised. However, given all the Instagram stories I’ve been seeing about people making their own homemade bread, I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised.
If you’re someone who has recently caught the baking itch, why not temporarily give up your sourdough dreams in favor of making some dog treats. We can guarantee your dog will love you even more if you make them some pretty easy, but extremely tasty treats.
Chef Janie has a great recipe for pumpkin dog treats, and as she’s said herself, “Our Siberian Husky pup loves these biscuits I made up a few weeks ago. They stay fresh in a container for over a month. They really clean her teeth and breath…keep her coat shiny. Great for training treats as well.”
The ingredients are as follows:
2 cups of flour (can be 1 cup whole wheat and 1 cup all-purpose, or 2 of either)
1/2 cup sweet rice flour
1/2 cup of sweet potato flour
2 tbsp potato flour (still has the peel on them)
1 1/4 cups of oats
tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 1/4 – 1 1/3 cup of pure pumpkin
2 large eggs
1/2 cup peanut butter (no sugar, no sweetener)
3 or 4 drops fish oil (optional)
It should be noted that Chef Janie does add a dash of garlic for flea protection, however, she does caution that garlic and onion are NOT good for dogs, therefore it’s imperative that garlic only be used in very, very small amounts. Additionally, you shouldn’t use dried garlic.
Of course, you can, and should, double-check with your vet regarding the ingredients used for homemade dog treats.
Chef Janie has also said, “You can exchange all for Gluten-free flours as well. You can remove the garlic if this is a problem for you or pup.”
