How To Make A DIY Thundershirt For Your Dog

Fireworks are fun for us. Most humans do enjoy a good firework display – particularly during the summer months. There is something nice about a cool summer evening out on a blanket watching the night sky light up like a Christmas tree.

While we may like fireworks, our pets usually do not. For them, it’s their own personal hell. In fact, most shelters report that the highest number of lost animals are reported the day after holidays when fireworks are most prevalent, like the 4th of July.

But there may be something out there to help your dog reduce their stress levels during both fireworks or thunderstorms. And it’s all DIY!

It is similar to the Thundershirt – a swaddle that is said to help reduce your pet’s anxiety.

The wrapping method was developed by TTouch as a way to calm pets. The body wrapping can also be used on shy or nervous dogs to help them feel safe – so you don’t even need a reason like the 4th of July.

The TTouch Wrap was demonstrated by Sarah Hauser, who claimed that wrap should only be left on your pet for no more than 15 minutes, and you should never ever leave your pet unattended with the wrap on. Hauser recommends using a 2″ ace bandage for small dogs, and a 3″ bandage for bigger dogs.

As it turns out, the body wrapping technique can also be used on senior dogs, shelter dogs, or dogs recovering from either surgery or an illness. So apparently it’s an all-around useful wrapping style that helps all types of anxiety and stress.

So, you may be wanting to give this a try next time you feel like you need some help getting your pet through the worst of the next firework display. What do you think? Would you try it?
