A lot of behaviors that are “cute” when puppies do them can become dangerous if they persist as adults. One of these is jumping on people. When a five pound puppy does it, it can be tempting to return the greeting and give attention — but it’s not so fun when it’s a fifty or hundred pound dog. In fact, biting isn’t the only way that dogs can injure people. They can do it by knocking them down.
The best time to solve this problem is at the beginning, when the dog is a puppy and still learning the rules of the world. However, if you have an adult dog with the same issue, a lot of the same techniques and advice will work. The main rule is to not reward the jumping behavior by giving any kind of affection — which includes eye contact, verbal praise, and petting.
