Most of the time when you heard about firefighters getting called out to a scene to rescue an animal caught in a tree, it’s usually a cat. Cats are well-known climbers of trees, and sometimes they get a little overly-ambitious in their pursuits and end up getting stuck.
However, firefighters from the Lathrop Manteca Fire District in Lathrop, California experienced a first for their careers when they were asked to rescue a dog who’d gotten stuck in a tree. Apparently, a German Shepherd had gotten himself stuck after chasing a cat up a tree.
“You may have heard that our firefighters get cats out of trees, but what about dogs?!?!” firefighters posted to Facebook. “Right after Truck 30 and Engine 35 dropped off Santa that was exactly their next call.”

Photos of the German Shepherd reveal the canine happily cornering the cowering feline, only for the dog to realize that he has put quite a bit of distance between himself and the ground. By the time the firefighters show up, the German Shepherd is looking quite sheepishly – no doubt wondering how he got himself into this strange situation. Clearly, this dog didn’t think things through carefully enough.

Lucky for him, the firefighters had no problem propping a ladder against the trunk of the tree in order to be able to get the dog back down to the ground safely. Even though he seemed fine, firefighters still administered water and oxygen just as a safety precaution.
And while the dog survived his ordeal, his rescuers are hoping this teaches him a valuable lesson about safety.

“Glad to hear that all turned out well for this pooch,” firefighters wrote. “We are all pretty sure he’ll think twice about chasing cats up the next tree.”
I really hope they didn’t leave the cat up the tree…
