Chef Turns 5-Star Hotel’s Leftovers Into Food For Shelter Dogs

Concerned with the issue of global food waste, the head chef of the five-star Hotel Fairmont in Abu Dhabi, Chef J Gourmet, has come up with an ingenious way of re-using the hotel’s uneaten food.

Rather than seeing it off to a landfill to rot, Chef J Gourmet has re-purposed it into dog food in order to feed the area’s strays.

The program is called the Doggy Bag Initiative. After every meal, the restaurant staff collects the leftover food into large trash bags. According to Chef J Gourmet, they take precautions to avoid potentially harmful ingredients – so desserts or rich foods with heavy sauces or too many spices are left out of the collection.

The leftover meat, grains, and vegetables are then run through the hotel’s industrial grinder and turned into five-star gourmet dog food!

The chef and his staff then hand-deliver the food to Cloud 9 Pet Hotel and Care, which is a local animal shelter and stray rescue. As anyone can imagine, the dogs are more than happy to chow down on the leftovers.

Food waste is a pretty big global issue. According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, 2.1 billion tons of food gets wasted every year. In addition to being reckless, food waste contributes to even bigger problems such as pollution.

Large organizations like hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets are responsible for much of the food waste in our world. Most of it is perfectly good, but food safety laws prevent it from being redistributed for human consumption.

Luckily for the dogs at Cloud 9, there are no laws against giving leftovers to stray dogs in need.

Since Chef J Gourmet began his Doggy Bag Initiative, several hotels in the area have also followed suit, including Hotel Al Wahda Grand Millenium and Hotel Crowne Plaza.

Chef J Gourmet is hopeful to inspire many other hotels and restaurants around the world to share their leftovers with stray dogs. This is exactly the kind of global trend that we need, don’t you agree?
